Welcome back to Spanish!  It is exciting that you have chosen to continue studying Spanish this year.  Did you know that Spanish is spoken by over 360 million people in 21 countries, and is one of the five official languages of the U.N.?  This year you have the opportunity to learn more of this exciting language.

The course also provides opportunities for you to develop an openness to the cultural diversity of the world’s Spanish speaking peoples. You will experience creative works in Spanish and learn about the traditions, behaviours, and contemporary issues that shape life in the Hispanic world.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Communication

-         communicate needs, desires and emotions

-         describe events and experiences in logical progression

-         exchange opinions and give reasons for preferences on topics of personal interest

-        participate in a variety of situations drawn from real life

2. Acquiring Information

-          process and adapt information from age-appropriate Spanish-language resources to complete authentic tasks

-          convey acquired information in formats that show growing independence in oral and written language

3. Experiencing Creative Works

-          view, listen to, and read creative works, and respond to them in various ways

4. Understanding Cultural Influences

-          examine aspects of culture, both traditional and contemporary, in Spanish-speaking regions of North America

-         explore lifestyles in Spanish-speaking countries

-         describe their own customs and discuss similarities to those of Spanish-speaking cultures

We will be reading the novel Esperanza in class


PARTICIPATION

In this class we will continue to tell stories together, although the number of stories told will befewer than in Beginner's Spanish.   During these stories it is your RESPONSIBILITY to behave in a way that encourages positive RESULTS by...

 • Sitting up

• Keeping your eyes up front

• Writing down EVERYTHING that you see on the board

• Responding with enthusiasm to the story!

 

 EVALUATION:

Term Marks:

50%      Quizzes and tests

40%       In class writing and other projects

5%         Current Events Assignment

5%         Culture Project

 

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:

Attendance: You are expected to come to class every day and be prepared to work.  A note from home is required for every absence.  Remember, to learn a second language, you need to be here!

Punctuality:  You are expected to arrive on time for class.  If you are late, you must take a late slip and fill it in.  I don’t like getting these without a good reason!

Supplies: Bring them!!!! Do not ask your teacher to borrow writing utensils!

Electronics:  Please leave these in your bags during class time. 

Extra help:  Please come and see me whenever you feel that you are not understanding something.  My door is always open!

Cheating: Any cheating will not be accepted, and an automatic '0' will result.  This most definitely includes online translators.   This also includes obvious help from native speakers of Spanish.

Tests/Assignments:  It is YOUR responsibility to re-schedule any missed tests  and get in any late assignments due to illness.  These must also be accompanied by a note from home explaining your absences.
