El Cinco de mayo:

It's that time of year! As in years past, all the Spanish classes will be combining to put together one big Cinco de Mayo celebration in the cafeteria.

What is your part?  You may work on your own or with a partner. (You may possibly work in groups of 3, but then you need to provide more activities/food, and I will mark harder).

1)    You will be completing an assignment that explains Cinco de Mayo.  This will be handed in as part of your mark (15 puntos)

2)    You will prepare a typical Mexican food dish to be eaten by our visitors (20 puntos).  This should be a finger food that is easy to eat.   Your dish should feed around 50 people in the two blocks.

3)    You will prepare a station with at least one activity that our visitors can participate in – a game, a trivia quiz, etc., (20 puntos). Your number of activities will depend on the number of people in your group and the type of activity you are preparing.

4)    You will decorate your table in a festive way, with a very visible sign explaining your food/activities, etc.  You must bring a tablecloth for your table. You will also engage people who walk by your table, and make sure you are actively participating. You will work really hard on this and will be responsible for self-assessing your part.  (30) puntos)

Some things we will need in particular:

  1. One group to DJ and prepare the music station for the first block, and one group to DJ for the second block

  1. One group to prepare a large display telling people what Cinco de Mayo is.

  1. One group to put together an awesome photo booth.

  1. The annual chile eating competition!

How am I being marked??

Food:

Effort involved – Did you find a recipe and make something?  Did you go to the store and throw together something last minute?

Authenticity – Does it say ‘Old El Paso’ anywhere on the box??

Sufficient quantity – Did you make enough food for all the people who came to your table?

Activity:

Effort – Did you make a thoughtful activity that looks interesting and creative?

Other student participation – Were you able to get other students to participate in your activity?

Overall:

CINCO DE MAYO ideas…

DINERO – We have some money allotted to us by the PAC for our food purchases.  Keep your receipts for what you buy, and you will get reimbursed up to approximately $15.  I will do my best to reimburse everyone, but if you spend too much over $15 please know that there is a chance you might not get all your money back.

Some food ideas:

-flan, guacamole, Mexican corn on the cob, alfajores (cookies), layered dip, stuffed jalapeños, churros, spicy popcorn, frozen paletas, chocobananos, sombrero cookies, Mexican flag jello, pupusas, plátanos fritos, 7 layered dip, 3 leche cake, polvorones cookies, mango ice, different salsas (pico de gallo, mango and avocado salsa, etc), mole, ceviche, dulce de leche, etc

Some drink ideas:

-rosa de jamaica (hibiscus juice), horchata, real lemonade (made from real limes), fruit smoothies, etc.

No OLD EL PASO (etc).  This is hand made with love from the Mexican in you.

Some store suggestions for Mexican food products:

El Mercado Persa – 1730 Commercial (at 1st Ave) This store used to have a lot of Mexican food, although these days they have a bit less.

Dollar Grocers – 2210 Commerical (at 6th Ave)

El Pulgarcito restaurant – 2522 E Hastings.  This restaurant has quite a few Mexican goods for sale at the back of the store.

Donald's on Hastings also has a small section of Mexican goods.

Some activity ideas:

Be creative with your ideas – come up with a dance, activity, game, quiz, etc. to entertain your visitors!  You must, however, get final approval before you begin.  The following are suggestions only:

Performance: Can you dance salsa or play the guitar?  Put something together for your audience!

Test your knowledge of Mexico or Spanish trivia game:  Think of a creative way to test people on what they know about Mexico, or do something similar in which you test them on common Spanish phrases.

Chili Pepper Guessing Game:Fill a jar with a variety of different chili peppers (keep track of what kind and the heat level!) and have each of the guests try to guess how many are in the jar. The guest with the closest estimate wins a prize (like a basket with fresh chips and homemade salsa).  You could also do this with a jar of frijoles

Mexican Hat Dance Relay:  Split people up into two groups. Set up two sombreros a distance away, one for each of the groups. Have one child from each team run to the sombrero, do a silly Mexican hat dance around it, then run back. The first team to have all its players complete the relay wins a prize (like a box of "Hot Tamales")!

Peso Toss: Inspired by the beanbag toss game, this activity has a Mexican twist. Set up five sombreros in a line. Label the sombreros with a point value, with the values increasing as you get further away from the starting point. Give each kid three Mexican pesos to use for the game. The kids can take turns tossing the pesos into the sombreros. The child with the most accumulated points wins! If there is a tie among players, go into a final round where the two players can each toss one coin.

Mexico Bean bag toss with map of Mexico: Place cardboard Mexico box a little distance from a wall with a paper box lid on floor to catch chocolate bean bags. Mark your distance line according to age and skill of children. Line children up behind the line and place a bucket of bean bags beside them. Give each child three tries to get their bean bag through the hole. Get all three bean bags in and earn a reward.

Pin the tail on the torro:As it sounds!
